Sharing our own stories is vital, and Black writers are adept at expressing the unique experiences of being Black in the world. Here are a few books I live and read to my children.
In a world filled with screens and digital distractions, it’s easy to overlook the simple pleasure and transformative power of a good book. Yet, as parents, educators, and caregivers, it’s our responsibility to ignite a love for reading in the hearts of our children, as it is a gift that lasts a lifetime.
Reading is so much more than decoding words on a page. It is a gateway to imagination, creativity, and intellectual growth. When children read, they are transported to new worlds, encounter diverse characters, and explore unfamiliar concepts. It sparks their curiosity, expands their vocabulary, and cultivates critical thinking skills.
One of the most profound benefits of reading is its impact on language development. The more children read, the more exposure they have to a variety of words, sentence structures, and literary devices. This exposure enhances their communication skills, broadens their understanding of language, and helps them express themselves with clarity and confidence.
